About renting in Joliet

Joliet is located in Will and Kendall counties, about 30 miles southwest of Chicago, and is the county seat of Will County, according to the City of Joliet. The 2020 Census counted 150,362 residents, making Joliet the third-largest city in Illinois. Most of the city is in Will County; the Census counted 14,047 residents in the Kendall County portion.

Getting around. The city lists 10 interstate interchanges on I-80 and I-55 within its limits. Joliet Gateway Center, 90 E. Jefferson Street downtown, is the terminal for Metra's Rock Island line to LaSalle Street Station and Heritage Corridor line to Chicago Union Station, and an Amtrak stop. Pace buses serve the city and nearby suburbs.

City services. Joliet is governed by a nine-member City Council that includes the mayor. The city bills water, sewer and municipal waste on one monthly utility bill, and its code requires owners of rental dwelling units to register with the city.

History. The Joliet prison on Collins Street opened in 1858, built by inmates from limestone quarried nearby, and closed in 2002; it's now a historic site. The Rialto Square Theatre downtown opened on May 24, 1926.
