About renting in Lockport

Lockport is a city in Will County, along the Des Plaines River valley and the Illinois & Michigan Canal. The 2020 Census counted 26,094 residents.

Getting around. Lockport has a station on Metra's Heritage Corridor, the first stop after Joliet on the way to Chicago Union Station, followed by Romeoville, Lemont, Willow Springs and Summit. Metra's trip planner showed weekday trains only on this line when we checked in November 2026. See our commuting guide for times and fares. The Lockport Prairie Nature Preserve, a 320-acre dolomite prairie, is on Division Street east of Route 53/Broadway in Lockport Township.

History. According to the City of Lockport, the first permanent settler in the area, Armstead Runyon, built a homestead along Fiddyment Creek in 1830. In 1837, I&M Canal chief engineer William Gooding oversaw construction of the canal's headquarters building here, and the canal commissioners platted and named the Town of Lockport; the city notes the site sits 40 feet higher than Joliet, which gave it water-power potential. Lockport was incorporated as a town in 1853 and as a city in 1904. The Chicago and Alton Railroad arrived in 1858.
