Frequently asked questions
Answers about searching for rentals, contacting landlords, posting a listing, reviews and how JolietRent works.
Last updated
- Is JolietRent free for renters?
- Yes. Searching, contacting landlords and reading neighborhood, school and guide pages are free.
- How do I contact a landlord?
- Use the form on the listing page. Your message is emailed to the landlord, who replies to you directly. We share your message only with that listing's landlord.
- How much does it cost to list a property?
- A standard listing is free and stays up for 60 days. Paid featured placement and a property manager package are described on the List your property page.
- Why does my listing need approval?
- Every new or edited listing is checked before it goes live, including for fair housing compliance. Most listings are reviewed within one business day.
- Why was my listing text blocked?
- Our listing form blocks phrases that state a preference based on a protected class, such as "no kids," "adults only" or "perfect for singles." Describe the property instead, for example the number of bedrooms, the amenities, or the policies that apply to every applicant.
- Who can write an apartment review?
- Current and former residents only, after confirming their email address. Owners, managers and staff of a building can't review it, and nobody can be paid for a review.
- Why doesn't a building show an average rating?
- We show an average only after a building has at least three published reviews, and we always show the number of reviews beside it.
- Can a landlord remove a negative review?
- No. Landlords can post one public reply to each review but can't edit or remove reviews. Reviews are removed only for the four reasons in our review policy.
- Do you rate neighborhoods or schools?
- No. We publish sourced facts such as Census rent figures, commute times and state report card data, with links to the original source, and leave the judgment to you.
- Where did my old JolietRent bookmark go?
- Pages from the old site redirect to the closest page on the new site. If something you used is missing, contact us and let us know.
